I’m Liz and I run Oaticakes for Rabbits from my home in Bedfordshire.
I’ve kept rabbits as an adult since 1998. For 10 of those years, we ran a sanctuary for elderly, special needs and terminally ill rabbits. During that time, unfortunately we saw the very worst effects of poor nutrition on the health of rabbits. A good diet is so important for all aspects of rabbit health – teeth, digestion, bladder health, weight, mobility, the list goes on. So, the rabbit diet is a topic that became of great interest to me.
I first started making rabbit treats in 2007 to help raise funds for the vet bills of rescue rabbits. Over the years the treats became more and more popular, leading to an increase in production to keep up with demand.
In 2016 I rebranded my rabbit treats as Oaticakes, named after an amazing special needs rabbit that came into our lives for just a few short months. A beautiful yellow continental giant rabbit, his name was Otis but I gave him the nickname Oaticakes. After his passing I realised it would be a great name for my treats and Otis can now be found on the Oaticakes logo.
A year later, I decided to take the plunge and turn making rabbit treats into a full-time job. Oaticakes for Rabbits became an official registered business.
As demand for Oaticakes increased further I realised I could no longer continue making them from the house. I got a purpose- built rabbit treat kitchen erected at the end of the garden in 2019. From there I haven’t looked back and Oaticakes for Rabbits has continued to grow and grow.
In 2023 I worked closely with Central Bedfordshire’s trading standards to make sure all my product labelling was accurate and legal as this is a very complex area. They also pointed me in the right direction for sending my rabbit treats to be nutritionally analysed at a food testing laboratory. This was a very costly process, but so worthwhile. Now Oaticakes for Rabbits produces professional quality rabbit treats, that are completely transparent – you know exactly what you are giving your rabbit when you feed them Oaticakes. Yet you still get the love and care of an individually created homemade treat.
I may no longer be rescuing rabbits, but rescue rabbits will always be in my heart. I hope I am still “doing my bit” towards the improvement of rabbit welfare by providing quality rabbit treats made from the very best of ingredients with your rabbit’s health as my primary focus.
